Schools were established in Jefferson County from the earliest time, but public education did not begin until 1900. The first public school was Moon's School House. Other community groups also formed the first schools. Churches provided organized education with the Presbyterians being prominent in providing schools in Jefferson County.
Many private schools were located near New Market and were named after the families or communities they served. In the 1800's, academies became a popular form of higher education. These were funded by public sale of land during the time thatTennessee was still part of North Carolina. One of Tennessee's first academies was Maury, a school for both boys and girls, founded in 1806. This ended with the establishment of the Dandridge Female Academy which was incorporated in 1850.
